Waldorf Independent School of Edmonton

At the Waldorf Independent School of Edmonton, we strive to educate the Whole child; Head, Heart and Hands. Our Early Childhood programs nurture the wonder-filled imaginative world of young children, building a strong base for future learning and development. In the grades, Teachers ideally stay with their classes, moving with the children up through grades 1-8. Art, movement and culture are infused into all academic study. Nature and natural materials are integrated into the learning experience. Our goal is to explore the child's full potential, while nurturing their self-esteem by encouraging the development of a whole range of additional skills. In this way, a lifelong love of learning is cultivated by nourishing the spirit of curiosity.

Parent Tot

Wooden blocks become roads or train-tracks... anything they can imagine! Children include parents in their play according to their fluctuating needs.

Those parents not engaged in child-led play may work on a simple craft project provided by the teacher, or help with tasks around the classroom.

Group circle activities delight the children through much repetition rhymes and finger plays.

Nursery School

The Nursery school provides a warm and inspiring environment where children can begin to develop their independence. This age-span lives in the world of imaginative play and imitation. By nourishing the mind and senses through imaginative play and gently guided activities, the Nursery School Program fosters the development of the whole child.

A focus on play in early childhood provides the child with time to develop creative and social skills.

Each day the teacher greets the children, welcoming them into a warm magical world. Our room is filled with simple, natural materials which invite imaginative discovery. Children’s creativity is stimulated as they transform wool and silk cloths, handmade dolls, and wooden toys into costumes and settings for play and adventure.

The children’s day is structured in a gentle, dependable rhythm that allows them to experience independent play, songs and verses, and storytime.

Healthy, organic snacks (where possible) keep them fuelled for classes filled with movement and fun. Activities and festivals marking the rhythm of the changing seasons help foster a connection with the natural world.
